Hair Extension Q&A’s

Thank you for submitting all your hair extension questions!

Are hair extensions damaging?

Hair extensions are NOT damaging as long as they are applied properly and you are fully educated on how to take care of them. My clients actually find that the health and vitality of their hair has increased after having the extensions.

What is the bond made of?

There are several different bonds on the market. My favorite is the HairDreams bond, there is no glue involved. It’s more a material, a nylon fiber. The bond is still flexible after it is applied allowing it to move with your hair. Many bonds are made of Keratin which gets hard as a rock and can be very damaging on your hair.

How long does the application process take?

The application takes anywhere between 1-3 hours depending on how much hair you are adding and the look you are trying to achieve.

Can you get hair extensions if you have curly or textured hair?

Yes! Everyone can get extensions! We customize the hair to perfectly match your texture for a really natural look.

Can you wear your hair in a pony tail?

You can still easily style your hair with extensions. It’s important to tell your stylist how you like to wear your hair so she can customize the application.

Why wouldn’t you just use clip in extensions?

Clip in extensions are great for a special occasion or once a month. They should NEVER be worn everyday. Clip in extensions are very damaging for your hair.  They are usually applied to the same areas on your head causing severe breakage due to the weight of the clip ins and the tension caused by them.

What is the maintenance for extensions?

Maintenance is VERY important when it comes to extensions! Naturally we all loose 80-100 strands of hair a day. This is your natural shedding process. Normally these hairs will come out when your brushing or shampooing your hair but since you have all the individual bonds in, these dead hairs are unable to fall out where the bond is. At the maintenance appointment those fallen hairs around the bonds are trimmed preventing any dreading or damage. I require my clients to come in every 4-6 weeks depending on their individual shedding process.

Can you color your hair with extensions?

It is 100% human hair so you can still cut, color, curl your hair. I recommend going to a color specialist if you decide you want to change the color of the extensions. The porosity is different from the porosity of your hair so the color needs to be adjusted for the perfect blend.

How are hair extensions removed?

They are removed very easily. A remover solution that breaks down the bonds is applied to each bond, after the solution is applied with smooch the bond and slide it out. If you properly have taken care of your extensions this is a very fast process and you will pleasantly shocked at how much the health and vitality of your hair has increased.

How much do hair extensions cost?

The price really depends on what you have and what you are trying to achieve. We charge per length and per bundle. You would have to set up a consultation to really discuss the look you want to achieve to get an exact price.

How long do hair extensions last?

The extensions last anywhere between 3-6 months depending on your natural hair growth process. On average your hair grows a 1/2 inch a month.

Do you have to wait for hair extensions?

After the consultation with your hair stylist the hair extensions are selected exactly according to your desired hair style, your own hair color or your desired color, and your hair structure. Sometime we have hair in stock and can do same day service. If we don’t have the hair in stock , we can order it and receive it within 24 hours.

Are hair extensions hard to care for?

You need to take care of your hair extensions as you would have your own hair.
We have a special hair care line, which is specially formulated to meet the needs of the extensions. The hair extensions are not connected to your scalp and therefore not automatically supplied with natural conditioning substances. The hair care products target this natural deficiency and balance it. When used regularly your  hair will retain its beautiful shine, optimal elasticity and deep color.

Beauty of Dreams!

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Eleanor Roosevelt

2011 has been a truly life changing year! I am so grateful &  blessed for where God has lead me!

I had some crazy idea to move from LA to Chicago and commute back and forth for my LA clients. Everyone including myself thought I was crazy for leaving my baby (salon) that I worked so hard to have it become so successful. It’s been a couple months now and I haven’t looked back! I opened up a new studio and have somehow fallen in love with Chicago. I’ve learned sometimes we just need to trust and let go of what we love to allow us to serve our highest potential.

I never even knew what YouTube was until a couple months ago when Jlovesmac1 & QueenBeeuty became clients in my salon chair. Soon after I became friends with Michelle Phan who has truly inspired and taught me everything I know about creating, filming and editing videos. Her creativity and dedication has rubbed off on me, I couldn’t be more excited for 2012!

Thank you so much for all your love and support!!

Lets bring in the New Year!

xoxo K

DIY Creative Color

Posted by Krista Bradford on December 27, 2011

DIY Creative Color!

On a recent trip to LA one of my clients came into the salon with red tipped hair. Turns out all she used was KoolAid! I thought it was such a creative way to add color without a long term commitment or any damage. I guess it’s a huge trend in the LA schools!

To prevent your hands from being stained red, purple or green make sure you wear gloves!

Pour your choice of KoolAid into a dish.

Add water. The higher the ratio of KoolAid to water the deeper and more vibrant the pigment will be.

Mix both ingredients together. The less water you use the easier the application will be. When you create more of a paste the color will be much more vibrant.

Dip the tips of your hair, make sure your hair is completely saturated. Towel dry and allow the KoolAid to sit on your hair for at least 30 mins for shampooing/rinsing.

Blue is best made by combining blue raspberry flavor with a little grape.

The Kool-Aid will take very well to chemically treated hair, that is, hair that has been permed, bleached, or chemically straightened. Use caution when dying, and be aware that your dye job could last just as long as a semi-permanent dye if your hair is especially porous and damaged.

Depending on how porous your hair is and how often you wash it, the color should last about 2 weeks or less.

Enjoy!

Please post pictures! I would love to see the creative color you guys come up with!

Time for a new hair brush?

Posted by Krista Bradford on December 6, 2011
Posted in: Uncategorized. 1 comment

Does your hair brush look like this?

It’s something we never really think about… replacing your hair brush!

Having bent bristles or a rough brush can be very damaging on your hair. It can cause breakage, split ends and the overall healthy and vitality of your hair can be compromised.

TO TEST YOUR BRUSH: Rub it against your arm, if it feels rough or scratches you, you know it’s time to replace it.

Brushing your hair should be an important step in your daily hair routine, morning and night. It removes tangles that can be damaging as well as all dust and dirt that can build up on your hair and scalp. Brushing is also the best way to naturally condition your hair, it will spread your natural oils from your scalp down the hair shaft. These oils are very vital to having healthy hair.

The picture above is a brush my client pulled out of her purse today. She has had it for over 20 years!! How long have you had your brush? I recommend everyone doing a little winter cleaning and toss those old damaging brushes. It’s good to replace them every year.

xoxo K

The Bang Fix

Posted by Krista Bradford on November 13, 2011
Posted in: Uncategorized. Leave a Comment

Almost all of us have had to deal with them – FRUSTRATING BANGS!

They look perfect when you leave your hairstylist but when you get home and try to style them on your own- they never look the same.

Heres some tips to style and care for your bangs:

Blow-dry your bangs towards the front of your face. After your hair is about 80% dry, use a large round brush and blow dry and direct your bangs in the opposite direction you want them to lay. Once your bangs are completely dry, swoop them over the opposite side for the perfect side sweep. Styling your bangs this way will also help to perfect any unruly cowlicks.

Did your bangs get cut too short? OPPS! Good news is they grow fast and with these simple tricks you can camouflage them.

If your bangs are cut too short with a side sweep, simply  switch your part to the opposite side. This will hide the part of the bangs that got cut too short.

If your bangs are cut too short straight across, try using a dry wax or a texture paste at the tips to create a more modern, separated fringe look.

If all else fails. Rock a headband or pin them back until they get a little more length.

MOST IMPORTANTLY! Always have your stylist cut your bangs dry to avoid going too short. Your hair stretches up to 80% when its wet!
